Santa Fe Fiber was made possible by the City of Santa Fe in order to attract more competition which in turn will promote more bandwidth for end-users. As such, Santa Fe Fiber is committed to open access for wholesale customers, namely, Competitive Local Exchange Carriers and Internet Service Providers.

The backbone fiber-build was completed in January of 2016. The two-mile run utilizes State, City and newly-laid conduit to connect the State IT Center (DoIT) to the Railyard and to Santa Fe Main (the CenturyLink Central Office). Through an arrangement between the City and State, Santa Fe Fiber benefits from bandwidth back to 505 Marquette in Albuquerque. Many carriers and other telecom providers maintain rack space at "505" to facilitate interconnection and Internet Access.

Plans are in place to build end-user fiber throughout the the Railyard. Hopefully there will be other fiber-builds to extend the reach to other parts of the City.
